Research is…

…not telling people what you know, but it is telling people what other people think. (Anonymous)

Just as well, since I don’t really know what I know – so I should have fun finding out! And I’ll get to talk to lots of people to find out what they think about it – it being the research proposal that I’m supposed to put together by 25th November. So here it goes….

What –

Second Life calling: language learners communicating creatively in communities of practice

Why –

To find out the perceptions of language learners and tutors when it comes to using a 3D multi-user virtual environment, such as Second Life, for the purposes of oral communication in the form of language exchange. That is,

  • Is Second Life feasible for language learning?
  • Is Second Life a practical tool for language learning?

Where –

Second Life communities of practice:

  • The Chinese Island
  • Koru
  • Cypris Chat
  • Virtlantis

When –

The timeline is coming soon

Who –

  • English language learners

  • Chinese language learners

  • Language tutors

How –

Action Research:

  • creating a series of lessons (artifacts)
  • delivering the lessons
  • pre-lesson, during-lesson, post-lesson interviews & questionnaires
  • (analysing the findings)

How much

  • time – 3 months
  • money – (estimate coming soon)
  • space – (details coming soon)
  • skills –  (details coming soon)

How often

Milestones (coming soon)

Looking forward to learning more about this. I have seen some actual language learning classes in session in-world and can certainly see the potential. Your research could provide the necessary data.

Thank you gridjumper. It’s always reassuring to know that any kind of research one is about to dive into is actually worthwhile for everyone else too, not just the researcher 🙂

    Will definitely keep you posted!
